Dear Wadena Residents,
As winter approaches, the City of Wadena enacts parking rules to keep our streets clear, safe, and accessible during snowy months. These rules are in effect from November 1 through March 31, with enforcement between midnight and 7 a.m., regardless of snow conditions. Following these rules ensures efficient snow removal, allowing emergency and essential services to reach you and your neighbors without obstruction. Let’s break down the rules and understand why they’re essential for all of us.
The Odd/Even Parking Rule: How It Works
The rule might seem a bit tricky at first, but here’s the gist:
Odd-numbered dates (e.g., 1st, 3rd, 5th of the month) mean you should park on the odd-numbered side of the street.
Even-numbered dates (e.g., 2nd, 4th, 6th of the month) mean you should park on the even-numbered side of the street.
The day’s date is determined as of midnight. For example, if you’re parking overnight on November 6th, be sure to park on the odd side of the street, as it will be November 7th after midnight.
This system helps the snowplows work more effectively by giving them room to clear one side of the street at a time, making the roads safer and easier to navigate. This rule also applies to any out of town visitors.
Why Following These Rules Is So Important
Snowy conditions present a real challenge for emergency vehicles like fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars. When snow accumulates on the streets, any vehicle parked on the wrong side can obstruct snow removal, creating narrow, slippery, or blocked lanes. By following the odd/even rule, you’re helping ensure that emergency services can get to you and your neighbors quickly and safely.
Avoiding Towing and Tickets
We understand that remembering to follow this schedule every day isn’t easy. But, to keep the streets safe and open, cars parked on the wrong side overnight may be ticketed or towed. This measure isn’t meant to punish but to encourage compliance so that everyone can benefit from clear, accessible streets all winter long.
In It Together
We know the winter months add challenges for everyone in Wadena, and we appreciate the effort it takes to follow these rules. By working together, we can make winter just a bit easier for everyone. When you follow the parking guidelines, you’re not just helping the city—you’re supporting your community’s safety and well-being. Thank you for doing your part this winter!
